My ethos
I am a self-taught photographer whose ethos is that camera equipment has now become so sophisticated that it is almost possible to let the technical aspects take care of themselves - the trick of a good picture, I believe, lies in the subject and composition of the shot.

My work
My work is largely colour photographic print, sometimes from transparency printed using the Cibachrome process. Many of the pictures are spawned from my travels in Europe, China, Japan, Thailand, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Americas and, more recently, the Rajasthan district of India. I am drawn to recording the buildings, infrastructure, and architectural composition of a place as well as its people. I am fascinated with the photographer's ability to emphasise perspective by the way a shot is captured.

I also work in monochrome where I experiment with enhancing contrast to produce stark, edgy images with a grainy "scene-of-crime" feel. In 2004, I became interested in computer-generated images (CGI), using this technology to produce surreal and fantastic "clones" of the original pictures.

In 2006, I was asked to submit some images for an exhibition entitled "The Human Body" and although figure study is something I had not attempted before, I decided to have a go. Seven images were submitted and to my surprise, six were accepted for exhibition. These images have become very popular, generating numerous sales, and have been shown at subsequent exhibitions, where they have again been favourably received.

Polarisation - the key to "Abstracts "
In a specific group of images - "abstracts" I have attempted to displace, morph, and partially conceal the obvious points of reference to which the observer's eyes would naturally be drawn - for example, the girls face, feet and hands in "Girl on a Car"; the tip of the spire and the centre of the circular stained glass window in "Church (1)"; the plane's wing in "Engines"; and the wide-eyed snarling face of the effigy in "Temple God". The images are polarised, imploded in on themselves or almost turned inside out to the point where opposing facets of the image are twisted back to meet and nearly touch. My purpose is to force the viewer to probe and examine the image in a different way so as to pick out elements that they would not normally see - to question what is in front of them to try and make sense of what is there - until hopefully,  some semblance of reality is restored to the forms and colours, and the shapes can be pieced together to resemble their original appearance.
